Today's game cancelled

29 August: News Flash!
Cory says today's 12 o'clock match against St Aloysius is OFF. St Aloysius rang to cancel after solid drizzle all morning made the ground unplayable. Stay toasty today.

By the way, there's something new on the Central Region soccer site: a third-term competition roster which will run on weekdays:

Great game against Margate

...which the Tigers won 2-nil. A terrific contest with great excitement for players and spectators alike. AJ and Ari scored our two goals, but the whole team played well and deserved its win.

And here's a video clip of Rosie, Nadia and the Tiger backline...

Too soggy to play

No games this weekend, according to the Central Region website, but Cory's hoping to see everyone for practice next Wednesday.

It's a 1-all draw

The Tigers and Waimea Heights kept one another in check in a low-scoring match. Ever-dependable Millie scored our only goal. Far away, at the other end of the ground, Alice Mary kept goal, with some excellent throw-ins and kicks.

Tigers roar back with a good win

The river-side ground was firm despite weeks of rain, though raked as usual by polar breezes. Taroona fought hard but the West Hobart juggernaut deserved its 2-0 victory this week.

Nadia and AJ scored one goal each, both skilfully set up Bella. We are one of the few sides to beat Taroona, who have defeated other teams in the roster by 10 and 17 goal margins. Everyone played their part today; it was very good job all round. Thanks go to Cory (the coach) and Paul, who umpired the second half.

Game OFF this weekend

The Tigers' game against Princess Street on Sat 18 July has been cancelled. This information was posted on the Central Region website on Friday with news that the WH ground would be closed.

Sorry everyone!

Great win, 4-1 to Tigers

One of the team said Nadia's like a "...chipmunk on caffeine" and wasn't that the truth today, after she scored two goals in the second half against a tough St Aloysius team. Nice work from Millie and Ari, Millie kicking a goal in her own right, then she and Ari 'sharing' another one. Don't ask me how...

Cory says the teamwork in the second half was the best he'd seen. (The score at half-time was one-all). A few absentees today, in fact only nine present, so no subs at all! Well done on a good game.

Be very afraid: Nadia lines it up

Busting with pride...

Margate downs Tigers 2-1

In a close match today, on a very muddy ground, the Tigers fought hard but were beaten by a skilful side. AJ and Anna's dads, Michael and Paul, stepped in to cover Cory's absence due to work. Thanks chaps, especially Paul who endured mud and moisture while umpiring the first half.

Nadia kicked our sole goal, and almost scored a second.

Tigers game is ON this weekend

Sorry for any confusion. Lots of grounds are closed (they're mud baths) but it looks like the Tigers will still be playing.

This was posted on the Central Region website this morning:

Waimea Heights beat sleepy Tigers 4-2

This was an interesting match because two Tigers, Rosie and Bella, joined Waimea Heights who were short of players. These two shared oranges with us at the break before rushing back afterwards with Cory's tactical plans! Waimea Heights got a little mixed up, with 10 players on the ground at one point.

AJ and Rhianna kicked our goals, and Alice Cox and Bijou were the goal keepers.

Uh, oh - Bijou's fallen over again...

Big win on Ground 9 on 23 May

This week, West Hobart Tigers defeated Albuera Steet, 5-nil. Goal scorers in an exciting match were Alice Cox (two), AJ (two) with one to Amelia.

West Hobart played strongly in today's match, played in beautiful weather at the Domain crossroads ground. We used the small ground to its best advantage, taking many goal shots from mid-field.

Forwards Millie and Nadia took repeated shots at goal before an explosive kick from Alice Cox's boot brought up the team's first score.

In the second half, Anna Schurink-Moeller peppered Albuera Street's goal-square and was unlucky not to score. AJ was rewarded with two goals after consistently out-foxing her opponents.

Bijou worked tirelessly in defence, repulsing the Albuera Street fowards and feeding the ball into attack. A great effort, everyone.

This game was the last in the Term 1 roster. Next term's roster should be available in the week commencing 15 June; we'll put a link to it on this site.

2 wet 2 play 2day (Sat 16 May)

Yes! Today's game is OFF because of heavy overnight rain (with more rain forecast, with snow to boot). See you at training!

Tenacious Tigers beat Cygnet 4-1

Nice work today. Cygnet's a long drive from town but just about everyone (apart from Nadia!) arrived early and was raring to go

West Hobart piled on the pressure during the first half, however it was Cygnet that scored first, to lead 1-0 at half-time. Forwards Rhianna, Bella and Millie combined well and were unlucky not to get a ball past Cygnet's red-haired (and skilful) goalkeeper. But the second half was a different story...

We started strongly after the break, then Ari quickly scored the first of our four goals for the half. She followed this with another, for a tally of two, before an accurate tap from AJ's golden boot sneaked past the keeper.

Cygnet then kicked an own-goal, accounting for the final score. Alice Fiddyment shone in goal (apart from one fatal error) and made several strong saves. Well done!

Next week's match (16 May):
West Hobart vs St Aloysius, 11am at West Hobart oval

Go south, young ladies

This week's game (9 May) pits the Tigers against Cygnet's Sea Dragonettes, a formidable team. Kick-off is at 10am but please make sure you're there 30 minutes before the game. You'd better have an early breakfast.

The oval is at the local primary school in Cygnet, on the corner of Frederick and Louisa Streets: turn into Frederick Street opposite the Central Hotel (see map below, or set your GPS units).

Tigers win 4-2

West Hobart kept relentless pressure on Lenah Valley, apart from a period in the second half when they eluded our backs and kicked two goals. Millie and Bella scored our goals. Parents, babies (and several animals) cheered from the boundary, as well as suggesting useful playing tips.

This ball hit me moments afterwards....thanks Millie!

The 2009 season begins!

Welcome to the new season. Our coach this year is Cory Griffiths, who's Rhianna's dad. He's young and fit and keeps up quite well with the Under 11s at practice. So far, we've had two training sessions and are looking good.

Returning players include: Rosie, Anna, Bella, Alice Cox, Alice Fiddyment, AJ (aka Anna), Millie, Nadia, Tessa and Bijou.

Welcome to new team members: Isobel, Jemma, Ari and Amelia.

This week's game is on Saturday 2 May against the Lenah Valley Matildas. Cory wants everyone there half-an-hour before the game, at 11:30am. That's so there's time to warm up and practice (and talk).

Orange roster: Yes, we've already sorted this out and will publish the list shortly. Alice Cox's mum Sally is bringing the fruit this week.
